Top 3 habits of successful architects!

Top 3 habits of successful architects!

Often, the quest for success seems like a race that never ends! And that’s probably a good sign because we should never reach a day when we no longer have any dreams. However, there’s still a set of habits that may help us achieve more along the way. Especially for the architecture field, here are our three favorites:

1. Prioritize

When working on your architecture project, do you ever feel that you don't know where to start? We've all been there! And here's the secret to solving it in a heartbeat:

Take a few minutes to note all the tasks down in no particular order. Eliminate those that are not necessary. Prioritize those with high importance and urgency. Order them as such, in your very own to-do-list.

And voilà! 'Zooming in, zooming out' in front of the screen for hours? Not anymore!

If you try it, you will be amazed at how much better you will feel once you write down everything that you have to do. For me, it always feels like a huge weight lifts off my shoulders. And it allows me to break the cycle of ‘I have to do this’, ‘Oh, I must remember to do that’ and ‘Above all, I must not forget this’.

2. Take quick decisions

Ever heard of the expression ‘paralysis by analysis’? It refers to the times when we over-analyze a situation so that we end up never taking an action nor a decision!

Maybe we spend days analyzing the context of our project, getting data, researching all these endless amazing architecture projects as a reference. However, when it comes to applying these pieces of information, we feel lost...Now, don’t get me wrong, analysis is crucial! But being able to extract real results out of it is much more important.

This is why we notice that architects who succeed most, are the ones who can take decisions fast and adjust them as they go. Even if it means making many mistakes along the way! Yes, I have come to realize that testing ideas and adjusting them later are a much more efficient way to progress than endless analysis.

3. Be tech-savvy

I can hear some of you saying: ‘But why? I’m an architect or an architecture student. My passion is building and designing. Why would I want to follow all the tech trends? I didn’t sign up for this!’

I understand this point of view. Except that, in today’s world, technology is driving almost all industries. And this is exceptionally true for architecture! Between all kinds of software products, 3D printing, virtual reality, smart homes…all the tools that we have are constantly developing. And the architects who succeed are certainly those who can adapt fast and leverage the power of these tools to create something that has never been done before!

What about you? If you wanted to implement a new 'architectural' habit, which one would make it to the top of your list? It could be one of the three listed here, or your very own secret recipe! Share it with us, we’re all eyes.
